Dawn and Neil were inspired to create a tranquil getaway that supports people to deeply nurture, recharge  and re-set.

We are both professional people who have enjoyed living in different countries, cities and towns. We had often discussed the possibility of a bed and breakfast business, coupled with a respite retreat for families doing it tough. This aligned with our professions; Dawn, with her PhD and background in Psychology and Behavioral Science, and Neil as a CEO of his own business and experience in the finance world.

Some years ago we were enjoying a weekend away in the pretty village of Bangalow and whilst exploring the countryside, we fell in love with the Byron Bay Hinterland. We found a magical acreage nestled on a hilltop between Byron Bay and Lismore. The views over Eltham Valley took our breath away and we decided there and then that this was the perfect spot to realise our dream and to share it with others both locally and from across the globe.

Highland Retreat was born - and with it the opportunity for hundreds of people to come and share in the relaxing beauty, recharge their batteries and experience the many stunning areas, walks, activities, arts and restaurants amidst vibrant populations.

We are proud to share this beautiful space.

The opportunity to ‘give back’ is something many of us enjoy. When we saw this stunning blank canvas, we decided there and then that it was the perfect spot to provide wonderful holidays for people from all over the world. Our purpose built home therefore offers self catering holiday accommodation for those seeking beauty and amazing views. We provide luxury accommodation but keep our prices moderate so all can enjoy.

In addition, your holiday is someone else’s lifeline. We provide respite for families experiencing challenges such as the loss of a child, caring for children or adults with special needs or those recovering from a serious illness or loss. Families are referred to us by agencies or through networks and friends who know of someone in their lives who desperately need some time out. This ‘giving’ aspect of the retreat allows for those financially bereft due to their challenges, to experience the beauty of our hinterland home and hopefully gather some strength for their continued challenges. Income supports our community members who need a little break from their courageous and often difficult circumstances.

To the beautiful Dawn and Neil
Thank you for an experience so surreal
Met with a welcome so warm
And spectacular views of the misty valley morn
A perfect peaceful paradise
A piece of heaven you did slice
To share with new found friends
Creating memories that never ends
We will be back, on that you can bet
To share another, magical, captivating sunset
With laughter drinks and wishing well
But 'till next time we say farewell.
